Tools for lawn aeration are gardening machines that are used to aerate the ground soil wherever lawn grass grows. The main purposes of aeration is that it improves the quality of the soil, as it pulls out almost two to eight inches of soil which leaves holes within the soil allowing water, air and nutrients to get to the grass roots.

- The Core Aerator
One of the most commonly used and popular of lawn aeration tools is the core aerator. It has hollow tines and makes about two to three inches of deep holes which are almost two to four inches apart. There are quite a few differently designed models of the core aerator, some of which have vertically placed tines that are supposed to move up and down at a very high speed while another form of the core aerator has a drum with tine fixed on it. The drum rotates as it is pulled over the ground.In both the cases the core aerator is moved above the ground while the tines are pushed into the ground and a core about the diameter of ¾ inches is pulled out of the ground.

- The Spike Aerator
This type of tool also has two to three inches of tines that are also about two to four inches apart. The main difference between the Aera-Vator and the core aerator is that the tines are solid while the diameters of these tines are about ¾ inches in diameter that are driven by a type of gearbox.
Whenever the power of the aera-vator is turned on the tines start to vibrate which helps in loosening the ground all around the tines. This makes the ground loose enough so that the tines can easily go into the ground creating the holes.
This type of aerator is very common for a lot of homeowners as it is the cheapest of them all and is easily available at almost every home centre available.
The spike aerator is operated by being pulled on the ground while the round blades that have spikes attached on it are poked into the ground creating an almost two inch deep and almost 1/8 inch wide hole.
The only downfall is that this type of aerator does have is that the holes are very far apart from one another and at the same time very narrow.
