One of the great things about winter is snow, snow, and more snow! Kids of all ages love it. We play in it, throw it, and roll around in it. Yet, as fun as it can be snow also brings a myriad of health and safety issues along for the ride. With winter already here in many places, it is time to think of ways to make snow time a safe time.
If you suffer from a chronic illness such as high blood pressure, heart disease, or diabetes, you need to be extra careful this snow season. Extreme temperatures and chronic illnesses don’t mix well at all. One of the best ways to care for yourself during the snowy season is to avoid extra physical activity. Leave the snow shoveling to someone else this year. This isn’t to say you can’t go out for romp in the snow, just monitor yourself and don’t overdo.
Watch for signs of dehydration. Yes, even in the snow you can dehydrate. Avoid alcohol when taking part in winter activities. Alcohol itself will dehydrate you and top it off with the extra physical activity and it is a recipe for disaster. Stop what you are doing if you feel lightheaded or dizzy. If you have difficulty breathing, call 911.
Walk slowly and carefully. This is the one time of the year that you can shuffle and not get in trouble for it. Many falls occur because beneath that pristine white and fluffy layer is ice. You are walking along one minute and flat on your back the next.
Remember to dress for the weather. Keep in mind that snow is essentially water and water gets you wet. Waterproof yourself as best you can. Scarfs, caps, gloves, a waterproof coat, socks, and waterproof boots are your best friends this winter.
Perhaps the most important safety tip is being so very careful when you drive. Winter accidents in cars are horrendous simply because many drivers panic and this panic can kill you. Make certain you have plenty of gas and take your time to get where you are going. Keep an emergency kit in your car. You can go to the homeland security website for instructions on how to make a kit.
There is no time like snow time! Enjoy the snow, enjoy all those winter activities. Just remember to keep safe and warm throughout the winter season.
