A smart home is a building in which various devices and appliances communicate with each other over the Internet. An automated sprinkling system can be part of that. An automated sprinkler system can keep track of local weather conditions and thus only water the lawn when necessary. For example, it has sensors that enable it to detect rain, so it won’t switch on if there has just been a rainstorm, but it will provide extra water during a dry spell. While conventional sprinklers have preset schedules that they rigidly follow, an automated system can adapt to local weather conditions and water the lawn according to actual need. Some systems even come with drip tubes that deliver water directly to the plants’ roots. That is obviously a lot less wasteful than conventional sprinklers that spray water over roads and driveways as well as the lawn or garden.

The best time to water the lawn is after sundown, for there is less evaporation at night, which means the water has a better chance to actually reach the roots of the plants that need it. While a human watering the plants often does so during the day, when they can see, automated sprinklers can be programmed to water plants at night.
An automated sprinkler also continues operating even if nobody’s home. It will therefore keep the lawn healthy and hydrated even If the homeowner leaves town for a few days.
It improves plant growth
A gentle rain is more beneficial for growing plants than is a deluge. The latter batters plants and washes away the topsoil. Most of the water also does not reach the plant’s roots. A sprinkling system can be programmed to mimic a gentle rainfall that produces less water over a longer time and thus gives the water a chance to sink into the soil and reach the roots. The system therefore imitates the conditions that are best for plant growth, and the plants consequently grow faster and produce more greenery and blossoms.
