How to grow a Cucumber
The cucumber being a tropical vegetable mainly survives when the weather is quite hot and there is plenty of water around it. You should keep in mind that the cucumber is frost effected and they shouldn’t be set in the lawn until the temperature of the soil is around the 70 degree range. This is usually not less than 2 weeks right after the last date of frost.

There are two different forms of the cucumber plants that can be grown. They are:
· The vining cucumber plant
· The bush cucumber plant.
For those who are interested in growing cucumbers in their garden should always keep in mind that this vegetable requires warm fertile soil to grow with a pH of 6.0 to around 6.8. But cucumber plants can tolerate a bit of alkaline soil as well with a pH of 7.6. Also it should be kept in mind that the soil should be mixed with composted manure. If you plan to grow the cucumber plant in a row on the ground you should create small hills which should be spaced at least 4 feet from one another. 2 to 3 transplants should be spaced per hill with seeds setting about 6 inches apart from one another. For the vine cucumber plant, the plants should be spaced about 1 foot apart from one another.
For areas with much cooler climates and longer spring seasons you can warm the soil up from 3 to 4 degrees by yourself by covering the hill with a black plastic sheet. If the season becomes much cooler than expected you do have a choice to wait a bit longer to mulch until the soil becomes much warmer by the sun.
If it is possible for you to trellis the veins of the cucumber plant, do so because it helps in keeping the plant clean and also at the same time saves space. It is a good idea to place a 12 to 18 inch diameter cage made out of 4 to 5 feet welded wire fencing to help support 2 to 3 vines at a time. It will help grab the cucumber as the plant grows taller.
Always keep in mind to fertilize the plant with liquid food at least after every two weeks. The liquid fertilizer should be applied to the soil directly around the plant stem.
