Getting My Lawn Ready for the Spring
It’s no secret that lush, green grass can elevate the appearance of your property. With warmer weather soon approaching, now is definitely the time to start making preparations. Many people are wondering, “What do I need to know about getting my lawn ready for the spring?” Here are a few key tips to remember.
Raking
Growing a beautiful lawn takes a bit of yard work. Spring raking is especially important. If you don’t rake up dead grass blades and old leaves, it’ll be harder for new grass to emerge. Debris can also make it difficult for fertilizer to absorb into the soil. However, be sure to never rake when the soil is muddy. This could actually destroy healthy grass crowns.
Eliminate Weeds
When getting my lawn ready for the spring, I always make it a priority to eliminate any weeds. By sapping vital minerals and oxygen from the soil, these invasive plants can ruin the health of your lawn. If you don’t mind a little dirt, you can pick small weeds by hand. Meanwhile, larger spreads can be treated with a pre-emergent herbicide. However, use caution with herbicides.
Fertilizer
To get your lawn off to a healthy start, be sure to apply fertilizer during the early spring. A slow-release formula will make your job a lot easier. It gradually releases nutrients over time, which means you won’t need to reapply the fertilizer as often.
Fill in Bare Spots
Bare spots can make your lawn look far less appealing. To prevent a potential eyesore, fill in these bald areas with grass seedlings. Afterwards, expect to notice small grass sprouts in about two weeks. By the time summer rolls around, the difference will be like night and day. Not only will loosely covering the seeds with hay prevent them from being washed away, but this will also help deter foraging birds.
